Frostburg booters beat cold, Presidents

FROSTBURG — Michael Norman and Kunle Akinfeleye found the net in the second half to lift second-seeded Frostburg State past eighth-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region men’s soccer tournament Wednesday night.

The Bobcats (13-6) shook off sub-freezing temperatures and an even colder wind to advance to the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2008. W&J caps its season with a 10-7-4 overall record.

With the win, FSU will travel to top-seeded Swarthmore for the semifinals and finals this weekend. Swarthmore beat Penn State Abington 2-0 and will host the final four teams. Frostburg will play Lebanon Valley on Saturday at a time yet to be announced.

It appeared that both FSU and W&J needed the first half to adjust to the cold as the Presidents held a slim 6-5 lead in shots, but neither team found the net for a 0-0 tie at intermission.

The second half was a different story as FSU’s attack came alive for a 12-2 edge in shots.

In the 57th minute, senior Alex Brainard knocked a corner kick through the 18-yard box to a waiting Norman, who slipped a shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Just over three minutes later, Washington & Jefferson scored on its first shot of the half to tie the game. James Calvert found Adam Suter on the left side of the net for a left-footed goal at 59:49.

It didn’t remain tied for long as Akinfeleye handed the Bobcats the win at 63:57. He collected his own saved shot and buried his second attempt in the back of the net for the 2-1 lead.
