Free throws lift Goretti over Spartans in fourth for 54-39 win

CUMBERLAND — St. Maria Goretti was 9-for-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to pull away from second-ranked Bishop Walsh, 54-39, Monday night at Bishop Walsh in high school boys basketball action.

The Gaels, of the Baltimore Catholic League, were led by Gevan with 20 points, while Fleetwood scored 12 points.

Bishop Walsh (18-6) was led by Quincy Redmon with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Hunter Marrale scored 12 points, while Chris Scarlett had four assists.

Goretti led 13-9 after the first quarter, 24-21 at the half and 35-31 after three. The Gaels led by just 39-34 with less than three minutes left in the game before the Spartans were forced to put them on the line from where they put the game on ice.

“Goretti has a very good team and is very tall,” said BW head coach Bob Boyle. “They’re much taller than us and, of course, all of the Division I coaches are going after (Gevan). But I thought we played exceptionally well with them. Quincy had an outstanding game, especially in the first half when he took it right to their big men.

“They play outstanding man-to-man defense. It was the kind of game I expected, I had just hoped to come out on the other end of it.”

Bishop Walsh will play Friday at Fort Hill for the City championship.

Goretti won the junior varsity game, 43-29, as Dante Coleman scored 19 points. Darius Berry scored 12 and Isiah Frazier had nine for Bishop Walsh.
