CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Levi Moreland won what is believed to be the first individual track and field state championship in Hampshire High School history by winning the discus Friday at Laidley Field during day one of the West Virginia Class AAA championships.
Moreland won the event with a throw of 160-feet, 5-inches to best the second-place competitor from Parkersburg South by more than three feet.
The Trojans, with a fifth-place finish by Casey Feezel in the high jump (6 feet), finished the championships with 12 points. The Jefferson Cougars ran away with the AAA boys title for their fourth straight state championship, outdistancing second-place Midland, 121-78.
The Hampshire girls scored two points in the Class AAA meet, as Taylor Harwood placed fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:22.68.
Buckhannon-Upshur won the girls team title with 102 points, to Morgantown’s second-place total of 84 points.
