DERWOOD — Led by junior Maggie Czapski, who captured an eighth-place medal for individual runners, the Bishop Walsh girls finished fourth in the team competition for the small schools division at the 2012 Maryland-D.C. Private School Cross Country Championships held Saturday at the Agricultural History Farm Park.
Czapski posted a time of 21:59 for the 5K course and has captured a medal in the state championships for three consecutive years. Teammate Caroline Snyder finished 13th with a personal best time of 22:51. BW’s Marie Lewis also recorded a career best (24:14) and finished 23rd overall.
Annapolis Area Christian School successfully defended its state championship, with St. Andrews Episcopal of Potomac finishing second, and Mt. Airy Christian Academy coming in third. Mia Gyau of Bullis in Potomac won the small school race in a time of 18:48. For the second consecutive year, Ellie Gonzalez of Catholic High in Baltimore was the fastest female competitor overall, posting a time of 18:07.
The Bishop Walsh boys finished ninth and were led by sophomore Marcus Linn who finished 25th overall in the individual competition. Linn had a personal best time of 18:56, which is the second-best time recorded by any Spartan runner since cross country was reinstated at the school five years ago. In his high school finale, BW’s Michael Bartholomew broke the 20-minute barrier for the first time, finishing 40th with a time of 19:50. Bartholomew became the fourth Spartan to run a sub-20 minute 5K since cross country returned to the school.
St. Andrews Episcopal was the champion boys team, followed by The Heights (Potomac) and Bullis. E.J. Douglass of St. Andrews Episcopal won the individual championship in the small schools division in a time of 16:06. Tai Dinger of St. Albans for Boys, Washington, D.C., led all runners with a time of 16:04.
Jimmy Cosgrove of Bishop Walsh was awarded a ribbon in recognition of his 10th-place finish in the boys junior varsity event. Cosgrove registered a career-best time of 21:24. The Spartans finished third in the boys junior varsity team competition.
