Hampshire tops Elkins

Trojans win 54-36, hosts Martinsburg Tuesday

— ROMNEY, W.Va. — A strong first half gave Hampshire a 13-point lead that the Trojans were able to carry through the second half as part of a 54-36 victory over Elkins to win the West Virginia Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 championship Friday at home.

Tori Veach led the team in scoring and rebounding with 11 points and six boards. Alexis Nickleson added 10 points and five steals, and Mary Feaster scored nine points. Ericka Gordon scored eight.

The Trojans led 17-10 following one quarter and 33-20 at halftime. Elkins trimmed two points off during the third quarter to make it 41-30 before Hampshire turned up the defense in the fourth.

Elkins got eight points from Ashley Simmons.

“The girls played really well in the first half,” said Al Straley, Hampshire’s head coach. “In the second half, we were able to sit in our 2-3 zone and they couldn’t hit their outside shots.”

The Trojans have won five of their last six games to improve to 11-12. They play Martinsburg at home on Tuesday in the first round of the region playoffs.

HAGERSTOWN — Calvary was held to nine second half points in a loss to New Life in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference semifinals at Grace Academy Friday afternoon.

This marks the sixth win for New Life in the last seven meetings.

The Eagles looked to be the defensive stalwarts in the first half. After trailing 11-8 after one, they allowed just five points in the second quarter to go up four at the break.

Liz Catoe converted a four-point play to tie it at 22 in the third. New Life would take the lead and keep it, going 5-for-7 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

Catoe finished with 13 for New Life.

Savannah Reed had eight points, seven steals and three assists. Karly Hipsley grabbed 12 rebounds to go with six points in the loss.

Calvary (15-8, 8-6 in MDCC) plays in the consolation game today at 10 a.m.
