ISLANDERS 4, SABRES 0
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Evgeni Nabokov stopped 35 shots in the New York Islanders’ win over the skidding and unraveling Buffalo Sabres, who were booed off the ice for a second consecutive home game.
Mark Streit and Michael Grabner broke the game open with goals 65 seconds apart late in the second period. John Tavares and Colin McDonald sealed the win with third-period goals. Matt Moulson added two assists in helping the Islanders (8-9-1) win their second straight and fourth in six games.
Nabokov made 13 saves in the second period and earned his first shutout of the season and 53rd of his NHL career. 
The Sabres have lost four in a row and five of six. They are 4-12-1 in their past 17.
This loss came in Ron Rolston’s second game as the Sabres’ interim coach, and first at home.
LIGHTNING 5, HURRICANES 2
RALEIGH, N.C. — Steven Stamkos scored and had an assist in Tampa Bay’s four-goal third period that lifted the Lightning over Carolina.
Benoit Pouliot, Tom Pyatt and Richard Panik had the other third-period goals for the Lightning, who snapped a first-place tie with the Hurricanes atop the Southeast Division. Marc-Andre Bergeron scored in the first to help Tampa Bay win for the third time in four games following a six-game losing streak. 
Mathieu Garon made 32 saves for his second victory of the season. The first came on Jan. 22 against Carolina. Garon has allowed three goals in two games against the Hurricanes and 12 in his other three starts. 
Chad LaRose and Drayson Bowman scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost three consecutive games after a 5-0-1 stretch this month. Dan Ellis made 34 saves.
