ROMNEY, W.Va. — Martinsburg’s stifling defense propelled it to a 54-37 win over Hampshire in the West Virginia Class AAA, Region II playoff final Tuesday night at Hampshire High School.
The Trojans bounced back from being down 10 after the first period to make it a five-point, 24-19 game at halftime.
Martinsburg took over with a 20-6 third quarter, allowing it to coast in the fourth. The Bulldogs’ smothering man-to-man defense kept Hampshire from setting up their half court offense consistently, forcing to 29 percent shooting.
Alexus Bonner led 15-6 Martinsburg with 13 points. Kiana Bullett and Essence Underwood each had nine.
Taylor Harwood led the Trojans with nine points, Mary Feaster had eight and Rachel Shawen six.
Hampshire finishes its season at 11-13.
MARRIOTTSVILLE — Percy Johnson and Jayla Powers combined for 28 points for Chapelgate in a six-point win at home against Calvary in the second round of the Maryland Christian Schools Tournament Tuesday.
Powers and Johnson, standing at 6-foot-2 and 6-foot, respectively, foiled Calvary’s attempts at a double team.
Eagles senior point guard Savannah Reed, according to head coach Rusty Kitzmiller, split her forehead and a broke a bone in her shooting hand on a hard foul in the first quarter. Calvary struggled without her, trailing 18-10 at halftime and 28-15 after three.
Reed returned in the fourth, finishing with 12 points and helping the Eagles trim the fourth quarter lead to three before Chapelgate closed it out at the free-throw line.
Karly Hipsley also scored 12 points for the Eagles along with 10 rebounds and four steals.
Calvary ends its season with a 17-9 record.
