Fort Hill reels in City crown

Miners 17-0; Rams’ Andrews no-hits BW

— CUMBERLAND — Sierra Minnick twirled a one-hit shutout for Fort Hill to clinch the city championship with a 13-0 victory over Bishop Walsh at Fort Hill Friday.

The Sentinels improve to 3-0 in the city with Minnick getting the win in all three. She struck out 11 and walked one, settling in completely after Maggie Mathews had the Spartans’s hit to lead-off the top of the first.

Cheyenne Rice doubled and singled twice for Fort Hill. Alyssa Whitacre doubled and singled, Michala Garrison doubled and Shania James singled twice in the win..

Fort Hill (13-6, 11-4 in the AMAC) will try for a 4-0 City mark when it plays Bishop Walsh (0-14) Tuesday at Cavanaugh at 4:30 p.m.

Mountain Ridge 10, Southern 0

FROSTBURG — Carlie Lewis fanned 10 batters during a one-hitter and provided the Miners with three runs batted in Friday afternoon, extending Mountain Ridge’s winning streak to 17 games by shutting out Southern in an AMAC softball match.

Lewis got her three RBIs on a double and a single, Shae Winner added three doubles and two RBIs and Kiya Wilhelm hit a single and provided a walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring on the mercy rule. Emma Baker had a double and a single, and Anna Broadwater hit two singles in the win.

Mountain Ridge scored two runs in the first inning and put up five more during the second. It pushed the lead to 9-0 with a run in the fifth and finished scoring on Wilhelm’s home run.

Mountain Ridge, which secured the No. 1 spot in the Maryland 1A West Region Playoffs, finishes the regular season on Monday at home against Northern.

Thursday

Mountain Ridge 13, Allegany 3

FROSTBURG — Leading 6-3 headed into the bottom of the sixth inning, No. 1 Mountain Ridge scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth inning to brush past Allegany Thursday afternoon and remain the area’s only unbeaten team.

The Miners scored twice in the first inning and tacked on three runs in the second before Allegany struck for three runs in the third. Mountain Ridge scored its sixth run in the fifth inning before finishing the game with the seven-run spurt in the sixth.

Carlie Lewis, who has seven stikeouts as winning pitcher, and Katie Llewellyn singled home runs in the first, and Chelsea Muir drove in Llewellyn with a double in the fifth. Mountain Ridge took advantage of three Allegany errors and used three hits to score seven times in the sixth.

Llewellyn finished with four singles, and Jenna Miller added three. Emma Baker singled twice.

The Campers got singles from Broke Dougherty, Tallia Logsdon, Chentelle Collette and Courtney Landis to score their first run in the third, before Ashleigh Eisentrout doubled home the final two.

Allegany (8-7, 6-7 AMAC) hosts Bishop Walsh in a doubleheader on Monday.

Southern 14, Bishop Walsh 0

OAKLAND — Freshman Carlee Andrews threw a five-inning no-hitter, getting plenty of support from her offense as Southern slammed the Bishop Walsh Spartans 14-0 Thursday afternoon in Oakland.

Katie Sislo got a hit in each of her three at bats, and Michaela Bosley, Sydney Legeer and Kristen Geroski all finished with two hits.

Fort Hill 12, Northern 6

ACCIDENT — Alyssa Whitacre went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, scoring four of Fort Hill’s 12 runs during a win over Northern Thursday evening.

Fort Hill countered a five-run third inning by the Huskies by scoring six times in the fourth. Northern had taken a 6-4 lead with the third inning outburst.

Alexis Kimmell hit an RBI triple and singled, and Morgan Cranford hit a bases loaded double to drive in three runs.

Northern (9-7, 7-7 AMAC) was led by Tiffany Glover with two singles and a run, and Brianna Opel with a two-run double. Kirsten Rayner added a double.

Northern will play at Mountain Ridge on Monday, at 4 p.m.
