Stevens, Knipple win Bi-County singles titles

FROSTBURG — Top-seeded Abbie Stevens and Corey Knipple prevailed on a long, trying evening of tennis Thursday night, winning Bi-County Tournament singles titles at Frostburg State University.

The tournament, scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and delayed by rain at times during the evening, finally ended a few minutes before midnight.

Both eventual champions, Stevens of Fort Hill and Knipple of Allegany, got hard-earned victories in the finals.

The top four players were seeded in each tournament.

Stevens edged unseeded Lauren Francillon of Southern in a three-set battle in the girls final. Francillon won the first set 6-1, Stevens won the second set in a 7-5 tiebreaker, then took the third 6-4.

Francillon had beaten third-seeded Kennedy Logsdon of Mountain Ridge 6-3, 6-0 and Haley Wolfe of Fort Hill 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final. Stevens beat Northern’s Kylie Mauricci 6-1, 6-3 and fourth-seeded Alex Miske of Southern 6-0, 6-2.

Knipple got the win in an all-Allegany boys final, topping unseeded Johnny Tompkins 6-1, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-3.

Tompkins reached the final by beating two seeded players, No. 3 David Hall of Northern 7-6, 6-0, and No. 2 Marcus Bowers of Fort Hill 6-2, 7-6.

Knipple defeated Fort Hill’s David Humbertson 6-1, 6-2 and Northern’s Dakota Fazenbaker 6-1, 6-3 in early rounds to advance to the championship match.

The Bi-County Doubles Tournament, originally scheduled for Friday, was rescheduled for Monday, starting at 3 p.m., at Frostburg State and Mountain Ridge.
