ACM rally falls short, 62-57

CUMBERLAND — Carissa Williams scored 16 points and Tiffany Evans added 12 as the Community College of Baltimore County-Dundalk stormed out to a large early lead then held on to defeat  Allegany College of Maryland 62-57 Tuesday night at Bob Kirk Arena.

“We’re really proud of our girls for overcoming a hard start,” said first-year Trojans head coach Bethany Sindy. “We overcame a huge deficit at the beginning and the girls really battled in the second half.”

Dundalk led at halftime 29-19.

“We’re getting where we need to be every day,” Sindy said. “We’re playing tough, playing hard.”

The Trojans never led in the game, but the closest they came was by four points in the second half.

Three Trojans scored in double figures. Monique Rhodes led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Derica Souder hit for 15 points and Maddie Nightengale added 14.

“I would also like to cite Rhodes and Nightengale for their leadership,” said Sindy. “Their intensity gave us a really great run in the second half and provided good team play.

“That team effort we will need to take into the rest of the season and to have it from start to finish to make it a complete game.”

Williams made six baskets including two three-pointers and was 2 of 6 from the free-throw line for Dundalk (4-1). Evans made four baskets, one from beyond the three-point line, and missed only one of four free throws. TroiQuay Malloy and Sheonta Camphor each scored nine points and Chelsea Eldrige and Ketorah Roberts both finished with seven.

Rhodes made six baskets and 4 of 9 free throws for the Trojans. Souder sank seven baskets, one a three-pointer, and Nightengale, a former Mountain Ridge High standout, made five shots including two threes and sank both of her free throws. She also led the team with four steals and had eight rebounds. Former Calvary Christian star JoJo Carr led the team  with 13 rebounds.

Allegany (0-5 overall, 0-2 Maryland JUCO) hosts Baltimore City Community College Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.
