CUMBERLAND — Mike Allen, who served as interim co-head coach for the final two games of the 2012 season, on Wednesday was appointed head football coach on a permanent basis at Bishop Walsh School, according to Principal Shelby Webb.
Allen, who was an assistant coach on the Bishop Walsh staff, and fellow assistant coach Michael Fields, succeeded Geno Taylor as the interim co-head coach on Saturday, Oct. 20 and led the Spartans to a pair of wins as they became the fourth football team in school history to finish with a 9-1 record.
“Mike Allen has been a valuable asset to our community both on and off the field,” said Webb. “Mike is the right person to lead our program at this time.”
Allen has coached football and basketball at Bishop Walsh for several years, previously serving on the football staffs of head coaches Mike Page and Taylor. He has coached varsity boys basketball under head coaches Jeff Rhodes and Bob Boyle. Allen was the junior varsity boys basketball coach two years ago and guided the team to a 24-0 season.
Bishop Walsh has a 10-game football schedule in the fall of 2013, including games with Mountain Ridge and Southern.
