BW rolls Randolph-Macon, ties record

FRONT ROYAL, Va. — The Bishop Walsh Spartans went out in style and into the record books Saturday with a 51-20 drumming of the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets to become just the fourth team in school history to win nine games and finish the season with a 9-1 record.

The Spartans of coaches Geno Taylor, Mike Allen and Michael Fields join the 1967 City champion Spartans of the great Paul “Bubbles” Thompson, the 1991 Spartans of Coach Gary Neus and the 2008 Spartans of Coach Mike Page in the elite 9-1 circle of Bishop Walsh teams.

With the 51 points, the Spartans further padded their school record for points scored in a season, finishing with an even 500 to easily surpass the 317 points scored by the 2008 team.

For the final time, senior quarterback Terrell McGraw orchestrated the fireworks, completing 5 of 8 passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 104 yards on eight carries, scoring one touchdown.

Senior Liam Rhodes caught three passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Quincy Redmon caught two for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Trenton Swan rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries, scoring a touchdown, while senior Billy Conroy rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Redmon picked up 28 yards on three carries.

Defensively, Rhodes and Bryan Evans intercepted passes, while Redmon had 11 tackles and Swan 10.

“It was a good effort,” said Coach Mike Allen. “The first half was tough and we had to make some adjustments. It looked as though they had scouted us pretty good, so all of the coaches got together and we ran some overloads and unbalanced that they hadn’t seen, and it paid off in the second half.”

The Spartans led 15-12 at the half on two first-quarter touchdowns, a 35-yard pass from McGraw to Rhodes, and a 27-yard run by Conroy. Conroy ran in the two-point conversion on the first touchdown and Logan Talley kicked the first of his two extra points after the second.

The third quarter the Spartans commenced separation, with Swan scoring from 34 yards and Conroy from 50, with Talley kicking and Swan running the conversions.

In the fourth quarter, it was, as the great Al McGuire would say, “Taps City,” as BW put three more on TDs on the board: a 70-yard run by McGraw, a 22-yard reception by Redmon and a 23-yarder to Rhodes, both thrown by McGraw, who also ran in a pair of two-pointers.

“I really want to thank the seniors,” said Allen, “Liam Rhodes, Quincy Redmon, Billy Conroy, Terrell McGraw, Logan Talley, Joel Whetzel and Matt Fisher for stepping up, and I congratulate them for completing their goal, which, in this instance, was the 9-1 season they were reaching for.

“I thank the players for sticking together through all of the turmoil to finish with such a great season.”
