Allegany, Brunswick booters play for region title tonight

CUMBERLAND — Top-seeded and unbeaten Allegany faces second-seeded and once-beaten Brunswick for the Class 1A West Region boys soccer championship today at 6 p.m. at Greenway Avenue Stadium.

Coach Stephen Cavallo’s Campers are 15-0-1, and a win would send Allegany to the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Campers are playing in the region championship game for the first time since a 5-2 loss at Williamsport in the 2000 final.

The Campers have pulled out a pair of nailbiters so far in the postseason. The first was a 2-1 win over Smithsburg, with Blake Geatz scoring the winning goal on an assist from Derek Fuller with just 29 seconds left in the second half. Allegany edged Northern, 1-0 in double overtime, on a goal by Dakota Bierman in Saturday’s semifinal.

The semifinal shutout was the 12th of the season for the Allegany defense, which has allowed only four goals this year and two in the last 12 games.

Brunswick is 14-1-2 and playing in its third straight region final and second straight West Region final. The Railroaders lost to Mountain Ridge 1-0 in the 2010 state championship game and again 2-0 in last year’s West final. They beat Mountain Ridge 7-0 and Clear Spring 2-0 to get to tonight’s title game, and have scored 73 goals and allowed 15 on the season.

Allegany won the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference while Brunswick won the Monacacy Valley Athletic League’s Antietam Division.

The Campers have scored 70 goals and allowed only four. Bierman is the leading scorer with 17 goals and four assists, followed by Corey Knipple with nine goals and 10 assists, and Fuller with seven goals and six assists. Goalie Nate Condor has has a .945 save percentage and 12 shutouts.

The girls region final, between Brunswick and Mountain Ridge, is scheduled for Tuesday, at Mountain Ridge at 5 p.m.
