PARKTON — Mountain Ridge’s Alexis DeVault ran to a third-place finish and led the Miners to a third-place team finish in the Maryland Class 1A Cross Country State Championships Saturday afternoon.
Boonsboro won the boys and girls team titles, with the boys squeaking out a one-point win over runner-up Bohemia Manor.
In the girls meet, the Miners were third in a 12-team field. Boonsboro won with 45 points, followed by Manchester Valley with 65, Mountain Ridge with 96, Perryville with 120 and Cambridge/South Dorchester with 131. Southern was seventh with 168.
DeVault, a senior, completed the hilly and challenging course at Hereford High School in 20:25.7, which was only six seconds behind second place Abby Culp of Manchester Valley, who clocked in at 20:19.1
Boonsboro’s Sarah Zielinski, who won the West Region championship a week ago, won the individual state title with a time of 19:48.6.
The Lady Miners had four runners receive medals for finishing in the top 25. They were DeVault, Andy Bennett (15th, 21:55.1), Leah Yazdani (20th, 22:41.9) and Madison Poland (25th, 23:00.4).
Also medaling was Fort Hill’s Chelsea Reikie, who took 13th in 21:52.9, and Southern’s Holly Weissgerber, who was 16th in 22:06.8.
There were 92 finishers in the girls race.
In the boys meet, Boonsboro won the team title with 69 points, followed by Bohemia Manor with 70, Perryville with 81 and Mountain Ridge with 110 in a 15-team field. Southern finished seventh with 199.
Bo-Manor’s Ty Franks won the individual state crown with a time of 16:58.
The first local runner was Mountain Ridge’s Rhett Poland, who placed 10th with a time of 17:46.1. Teammate Brandon Redmond took 12th in 17:56.7.
Four local runners earned medals by finishing in the top 25. They were Mountain Ridge’s Poland, Redmond and Jody Besaw (25th, 18:35.4) and Southern’s Zak Thomas (19th, 18:27.5).
The Miners had six runners in the top 40, including Dan Jones (30th, 18:55.0), David Hammett (33rd, 18:57.9) and Daryl Griffiths (30th, 19:24.6). Southern’s Devan Hamrick was 36th (19:16.9).
There were 116 finishers in the boys race.
