FROSTBURG — Ryan Russell scored a goal and assisted on two others as Frostburg State closed out its regular season with a 3-1 win over Goucher Tuesday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Russell, a senior, led the team to its 12th win of the season (12-1-4). The Gophers fell to 4-10-1 overall.
Frostburg opened the action with two goals in the first half. Russell corralled the ball to the right of the net and fired a low shot into the goal for a 1-0 lead just 4:43 into play.
At 23:06, Russell crossed a ball to junior Alex Brainard who scored to make it a 2-0.
Goucher scored roughly three minutes later as an FSU defender knocked a saved shot into the net for an own goal to make it 2-1 at halftime.
FSU added to its lead a little over 20 minutes into the second half. Goucher keeper Scott Witte made a diving save on a Frostburg header from Kunle Akinfeleye, who collected his own rebound and knocked a shot into the left side of the net for a 3-1 cushion.
Frostburg finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots while junior starting keeper Drew Hock made five saves. Witte stopped eight shots for Goucher.
The Bobcats earned a first round bye in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Tournament and await the winner of York/St. Mary's.
