Keyser's Landes, Smith advance to state tournament

Landes shoots 84 to earn return trip

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. —  Keyser's Matt Landes is returning to the West Virginia state golf  tournament for the second consecutive season but this year he'll have some familiar company as teammate Travis Smith, a junior, qualified for the first time.

Landes, a senior, shot an 81 and Smith came home with an 84.

Grafton won the Class AA, Region II 18-hole tournament that was held Monday at the Pete Dye Golf Course with a 250. Bridgeport, as the runner-up, also advanced with a 258.

The top two teams and the two lowest individuals not part of an advancing team get to go to Wheeling's Oglebay Park for the 36-hole tournament to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 8-9.

Bridgeport's Marco Oliverio was the regional's low scorer with a 78 and Grafton's Zach Musgrave was second with an 80. The Bearcats' Mitch Crutchfield was next with an 81.

Philip Barbour took third, one stroke behind Bridgeport, with a 259 followed by Keyser's fourth-place finish at 263. Robert C. Byrd completed the top five with a 267.

Rounding out the top 10 was Berkeley Springs (285), Petersburg (293), Lincoln (298), Frankfort (303) and Liberty (318).
