BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Keyser's Matt Landes is returning to the West Virginia state golf tournament for the second consecutive season but this year he'll have some familiar company as teammate Travis Smith, a junior, qualified for the first time.
Landes, a senior, shot an 81 and Smith came home with an 84.
Grafton won the Class AA, Region II 18-hole tournament that was held Monday at the Pete Dye Golf Course with a 250. Bridgeport, as the runner-up, also advanced with a 258.
The top two teams and the two lowest individuals not part of an advancing team get to go to Wheeling's Oglebay Park for the 36-hole tournament to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 8-9.
Bridgeport's Marco Oliverio was the regional's low scorer with a 78 and Grafton's Zach Musgrave was second with an 80. The Bearcats' Mitch Crutchfield was next with an 81.
Philip Barbour took third, one stroke behind Bridgeport, with a 259 followed by Keyser's fourth-place finish at 263. Robert C. Byrd completed the top five with a 267.
Rounding out the top 10 was Berkeley Springs (285), Petersburg (293), Lincoln (298), Frankfort (303) and Liberty (318).
Jake Phares led the Falcons with an 89 and Brian George had an 85 for the Vikings.
