Garrett rally falls short, 6-5

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Garrett got the tying run to third base with no outs and had the winning run sitting on second, but the Lakers fell just short in its comeback attempt during a 6-5 loss to Sullivan (N.Y.) County on Thursday at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

The Generals took a 3-0 lead after scoring once in the first inning and twice in the second. The Lakers got one run back in the bottom of the second before Sullivan put up three unearned runs in the fifth.

Garrett trimmed the lead to 6-3 with two in the sixth and scored two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Jason Hepple. Hepple’s pinch runner went to third on a wild pitch to put the tying run 90 feet away.

Sullivan got a strikeout from the next batter and a walk from the one after that. After a pop out to the pitcher recorded the second out, the runner on first moved into scoring position with a stolen base, but the Lakers flew out to left field with two runners in scoring position to end the threat.

Carlos King also hit a double for the Lakers, while pitchers Tyler Lawrence and Moorefield graduate Corey Reed combined for 12 strikeouts.

Jake Schilling had a double, single and two runs batted in for Sullivan.

The Lakers (6-12) play again today at the Experience against Alfred State.
