KEYSER, W.Va. — Ryan Streets led five double-figure scorers with 18 points and Keyser built a big lead and held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Frankfort for a 76-73 win and the Class AA, Region II, Section 1 championship on Friday night.
Keyser (12-11) will play Section 2 runner-up Bridgeport on Thursday, at home, at 7 p.m., with a trip to the state tournament at stake.
Frankfort (6-17) lost to Keyser for the third time this year but remains in the hunt for a state berth. The Falcons play at Section 2 champion Robert C. Byrd, also on Thursday at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
Keyser’s balanced scoring attack was just enough to overcome a 34-point night by Frankfort’s Chase Detrick. The Falcons, who scored 36 points through the first three quarters, scored 37 in the fourth, with Detrick getting 20 of them.
It was the first time this season that the Golden Tornado had five scorers reach double figures. Joining Streets was Wes Nelson with 16 points, Malik Harper with 15, Josh Hoban with 13 and Ryan Kunis with 10.
Streets also had team highs with seven assists and six steals. Hoban grabbed a team leading 13 rebounds.
Detrick hit nine field goals, including six of Frankfort’s 11 three-pointers, and 10 of 12 foul shots in his 34-point game. Gavin Mauzy hit three threes and had 17 points and Nick Smith added 10 points.
Hoban had eight points in the first quarter to help Keyser build a 21-7 lead and the Tornado was on top 31-21 at the half. Kunis had eight of his 10 points in the third quarter, which ended with Keyser seemingly in control, 55-36.
Then Detrick and the Falcons caught fire. They chopped the Keyser lead to four points late in the fourth when Malik Harper hit four straight free throws that helped the Tornado hold on.
The Falcons hit a three in the closing seconds. They made seven three-pointers in the fourth quarter and had 11 overall.
Keyser had won the regular-season meetings 66-56 and 51-44.
