Martz, Shaffer win state titles

COLLEGE PARK — Mountain Ridge’s Adam Martz put the finishing touches on a perfect season by winning a state championship, and Southern Garrett’s Austin Shaffer also returns home a state champ after a big weekend at the Class 1A-2A State Wrestling Championships at the University of Maryland.

Martz finished with a 44-0 record on the season and won the state crown in the 152-pound weight class with an 11-4 decision over Kent Island’s Colton Smith.

After two dominating wins on Friday, Martz scored a 9-4 decision over Patuxent’s Connor Furst in the semifinals. Furst finished 42-6.

Martz, a junior who helped lead the Miners to the West Region Dual Championship, placed second in his weight class as a sophomore.

Shaffer, a senior who will be continuing his career next year at West Virginia University, finished his high school career in style, going 4-0 at states and finishing with a 44-2 overall record.

He advanced to the 113 championship match with a 10-2 major decision over Colin McDonald of Patterson Mill, then faced South Carroll’s Tim Null in the final, which was a rematch of their region final a week ago.

Shaffer, who beat Null 13-4 last week, came away with a 9-5 decision in the state final. Null finished the year 43-3, with two of the three losses to Shaffer.

Southern’s Devan Hamrick and Northern’s Justin Opel finished second in their respective weight classes.

Hamrick, at 106, dropped a 4-0 decision to Danny Bertoni of Middletown, also in a rematch from last week’s regional. Bertoni finished unbeaten at 44-0.

Hamrick had won a 2-0 decision over South Carroll’s Joey Thomas in the semifinal round and finished the season with a 42-4 record.

After two wins on Friday, Opel, at 126, decisioned Jacob Rendelman of Owings Mills 9-2 to reach his division’s final, but lost to Anthoney Savage of Oakdale, 5-1. That, too, was a rematch from the West Regional, which Savage had won 11-8.

Savage finished the year 39-4 and was Opel 34-7.

Several other local wrestlers placed in their divisions.

Mountain Ridge’s Cody Matthews finished third at 120. After losing a tough 3-2 decision to Middletown’s Joshua Grossnickle in the semifinals, he regrouped and beat Anthony Genco of Hereford, 3-1, in the final and finished the season with a 40-5 record.

Northern’s Kody Osselburn finished fourth at 138. He lost to Tejon Anthony of Western Tech 3-1, pinned Mitch Lake of Patuxent in 3:31, then dropped a tight 6-4 battle with Bryan Davis of Williamsport in the third-place match. Osselburn’s final record was 38-4.

Mountain Ridge’s Tyler Maynard was fourth at 160. On Saturday, Maynard beat Montana Walton of North Caroline 4-2, then lost to Middletown’s Tucker Ziegler in a pin in 2:54 in the third-place match. Maynard ended the year with a 37-9 record.

Mountain Ridge’s Austin Clark took fourth at 195. On Saturday, he pinned Tristan Merson of North Caroline in 1:22, pinned Mike Henry of Patuxent in 2:33 and decisioned Chris Park of Marriotts Ridge 10-8 before falling 5-1 to Austin Keadle of Williamsport in the third-place match. Clark ended the year 42-10.

Twelve area wrestlers earned berths in the state meet. Results are listed in today’s Scoreboard page.
