Serio, Colegrove lift Frostburg over McDaniel in 14-12 thriller

WESTMINSTER — The scoring tandem of senior Ryan Serio and junior Devin Colegrove connected for the game’s final two goals to lift the Frostburg State men’s lacrosse team to a close 14-12 win over McDaniel, Wednesday.

The contest featured eight leads changes and seven ties but Frostburg (6-2) came away with the victory thanks to Serio’s and Colegrove’s team work.

FSU headed into the fourth quarter down 11-10 and Colegrove found the net with 12:06 to play to knot the score at 11 off an assist from Serio. Junior Chris Rios only scored one goal in the game, but it couldn’t have come at a better time as an unassisted tally at 9:45 gave the Bobcats a 12-11 lead.

Just over two minutes later, McDaniel’s Timothy McNichol scored for the second time to tie the game at 12-12. However, Frostburg had the final say in the outcome as Colegrove fed Serio for the game’s final two goals and the 14-12 win. Serio handed the Bobcats a 13-12 lead with 5:43 to play and he added a late insurance goal with 32 seconds left in regulation.

Serio finished with four goals and one assist, while Colegrove totaled eight points behind three goals and five assists. Rios contributed one goal and three first-half assists and sophomore Spenser Love scored three first-half goals.

Frostburg outshot McDaniel 44-32 and was a perfect 4 for 4 on extra-man opportunities. Neither team was able to take control of the contest as both finished 15 of 30 on faceoffs.

Serio scored three first-half goals and Colegrove handed out three assists over the first two quarters as Frostburg emerged with an 8-7 halftime advantage. McDaniel (3-4) scored 26 seconds into the second half to tie the game at 8-8 before leading 11-10 after three quarters.

Jason Lawrence scored four goals and handed out two assists to pace the Green Terror on offense. Pat Bivons added three scores and one assist.

Frostburg hosts Marymount on Saturday at 6 p.m.
