Top-seeded Tennessee faces No. 4 Maryland

BAKER, W.Va. — Gage Shaffer, Braiden Popluhar and Garrett Shoemaker homered and Frankfort collected 14 hits to beat East Hardy in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader on Saturday.

The second game was postponed by rain.

Shaffer, who started on the mound and pitched three hitless innings, finished 3 for 5 with a three-run homer, two singles and four RBIs. His home run came during a five-run seventh inning, which helped the Falcons move an 11-7 lead to a more comfortable 16-8 spread.

Popluhar was 2 for 4 with a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a single and also had four RBIs. Shoemaker hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Corey McDonald was 3 for 4 with a solo home run, triple and double for East Hardy. He scored three runs and knocked in a pair.

Shaffer struck out four over the three innings and left with a 7-1 lead. Hunter Jenkins pitched the final four innings and was the winning pitcher.

Frankfort (2-0) makes its home debut Tuesday against Keyser at 4 p.m. East Hardy (1-2) will play at Musselman on Monday at 7 p.m.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — David Delawder fired a masterful two-hitter and Ethan Turner had two hits and an RBI to spark Hampshire over Hedgesville.

Delawder was staked to a 3-0 lead before throwing a pitch as the Trojans (2-1) struck for three runs in the top of the first inning. Two scored on a double steal and an error, and Cody Kesner knocked in the other with a single.

Hedgesville cut it to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the second, but the Trojans added a run in the third and got RBI singles from Turner and Bucky Timbrook in the seventh to seal the win.

Delawder struck out eight and walked only one in a complete-game performance.

Tyler Anders hit a solo home run for Hedgesville (3-1).

Hampshire will play again Tuesday, at 4:30, at Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy.

Bishop Walsh    3    1

CUMBERLAND — Southern combined for 29 runs and 28 hits during an offensive explosion that led to a sweep of Bishop Walsh during a Saturday Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Haystack Mountain.

The Rams scored in every inning on their way to a 16-3 win over the Spartans in the opener before using a six-run inning and a five-run inning to win 13-1 to complete the sweep.

Matt Imhoff hit a solo home run in the first inning and added two more singles to help Southern to 14 hits in the early win. Tristan Nazelrod and Corey Horner both finished with a double and a single, while Keith Chapman and Austin Graham each doubled.

The Spartans, who had seven hits, got two singles from Will Giles and a double from Stefan Miller.

Mike Welch hit a two-run home run and had two doubles for the Rams in the late game. Graham hit a double and singled twice.

BW’s Miller hit a double and a single.

Southern (2-1, 2-0 AMAC) plays at Frankfort on Wednesday. The Spartans (1-2, 0-2) play at Keyser Monday.

KEYSER, W.Va. — Aaron Rodehaver carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished by allowing only four hits and two runs during Northern’s five-run win over Keyser Saturday afternoon.

Rodeheaver had four strikeouts and walked only one batter in a complete game. He allowed the first run in the sixth inning and another in the bottom of the seventh.

Brooks Carr hit an RBI double and added a single, and Trevon Jones had two RBIs and a single. Meshach Metz had a double for the Huskies and Logan Yommer singled and drove in one.

Keyser got an RBI single from Vinnie Cuthbertson during the sixth inning.

Northern (3-0) scored twice in the second inning and led 4-0 after the fourth. It led 7-0 after scoring three times in the fifth.

The Huskies play at Allegany on Tuesday. Keyser (1-2) hosts Bishop Walsh Monday.

Junior Varsity

Northern 4, Keyser 0

KEYSER, W.Va. — Hunter Mallow got 11 strikeouts and allowed two hits and two walks in six innings to send Northern over Keyser in the Huskies’ junior varsity opener Saturday afternoon.

Besides dominating on the mound, Mallow added an RBI single at the plate. Caleb King also drove in a run and had two singles.

The Huskies play at Hancock on Friday.
