ROMNEY, W.Va. — Dale Bryson caught one touchdown and intercepted three passes to push Hampshire to a 34-14 win over Preston in the Trojans’ opener on Friday.
Bryson caught two balls for 90 yards, with one a touchdowns, as part of a 189-yard passing performance from quarterback Shane Ennis, ans was responsible for three of his team’s four turnovers.
Ennis finished with three touchdown passes including two to Dane Heavener, who had 99 yards on three catches. Ennis and Heavner gave the Trojans a 14-6 lead on a 38-yard pass early in the second quarter and added a 33-yard score less than two minutes later. Dalton Clower scored from two yards out later in the second to give Hampshire a 28-6 lead at the half.
Lucas Powers gave the Trojans a spark from the beginning by taking the opening kickoff 84 yards for the first points just 13 seconds into play.
Bryson scored on a 54-yard pass from Ennis with 8:21 left in the third quarter.
Preston scored on a 41-yard run from Dakota Tasker in the first, and on a 34-yard pass from Austin Newsome to Scott Newsome in the fourth.
Hampshire (1-0) plays at Elkins on Friday
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Rion Landes scored once on the ground and once through the air to make the difference for Moorefield in a 29-25 win at Petersburg on opening Friday night.
Kelson Thorne returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown for Petersburg, but the Yellow Jackets responded with an 80-yard touchdown run on their second offensive play by Tyhiem Franklin to take a 7-6 lead.
The Vikings re-gained the lead 1:22 later with a Josh Inskeep 60-yard touchdown reception from Ryan VanMeter to give them a 12-7 advantage after one quarter.
VanMeter then hooked up with Alex See for a 22-yard score on the first play of the second quarter to make it 19-7. After a botched punt resulted in a Petersburg safety, Landes reeled in a 25 yard touchdown reception from Dakota Vetter to cut the lead to 19-16.
Landes gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 23-19 with a 71-yard touchdown run 1:44 into the fourth. They opened it up to 29-19 on another touchdown run for Franklin from five yards out. Inskeep grabbed his second touchdown reception, from 21 yards, to pull the Vikings within four with 2:14 remaining. Though, the Yellow Jackets would hold on for their first win of the season.
Moorefield (1-0) hosts Frankfort Friday and Petersburg (0-1) go to Pendleton County Friday.
