Spartans off to 5-0 start

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. — Haven Mackie scored three more goals and Bishop Walsh remained undefeated with a 4-1 win over Southern Fulton Saturday in high school boys soccer action at Southern Fulton.

Tony Russell got the Spartans on the board first, scoring on a head ball off a Will Giles assist at 16:37 of the first half. Mackie then scored at 7:21 on an assist by Ryan Dunn to make it 2-0 at the half.

Mackie made it 3-0 at 31:38 of the second on an unassisted goal and, after Josh Hill scored for Southern Fulton, Mackie scored again at 5:04 on another Giles assist.

Bishop Walsh outshot Fulton, 19-9, and led in corner kicks, 6-1.

Austin Crotts had six saves in goal for the Spartans, while Shad Gordon had nine for Southern Fulton.

“I felt like we probably were looking ahead to Tuesday when we play Fort Hill and may have underestimated Southern Fulton a little bit,” said BW Coach Joe Rowan. “It was a tougher game than we anticipated.

“Austin Cross is only a sophomore in his first year on varsity and is doing a nice job in goal. The (Southern Fulton) goal that happened came on a lack of communication between two defenders, so that was not Crotts’ fault. And Nick Mazzeo, a three-year starter at sweeperback, continues to play well on the defensive end.”

Bishop Walsh (5-0) will host Fort Hill on Tuesday. The junior varsity game begins at 2:30 p.m. and the varsity at 4 p.m.
