Andrews captures Iron Girl Triathlon

Over 900 women compete at Rocky Gap

FLINTSTONE — More than 900 female endurance athletes, ages 14-71 from 28 states and two countries, participated in the 2nd Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon Sunday at Rocky Gap State Park, which consisted of a 0.5-mile swim, 16-mile bike and 2.5-mile run to benefit the Cumberland YMCA.

Although 33-year-old Loren Winebrenner of Hyndman, Pa. led the pack through the swim and bike legs of the race, 32-year-old professional triathlete Kristin Andrews of Chevy Chase overcame Winebrenner in the final 2.5-mile run to win by five minutes. Andrews finished with a final time of 1:16:18, taking home a $1,700 prize purse.

Rounding out the top five were Winebrenner (1:21:44, prize $1,300.00); Janelle McIntyre, 48, Ellicot City (1:22:44, prize $800); Melody Kentrus 30, Frostburg (1:24:24, prize: $600); and Allison Gittelman, 41, South Riding, Va. (1:25:04, prize: $399).

The Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon benefitted the Cumberland YMCA.

“We could not have asked for a more beautiful race day for the Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon,” said Kari Ebeling, Race Director and Chief Operating Officer at TriColumbia, the promoter and host of the event. “Rocky Gap State Park provided the ideal backdrop for this event, whose mission is to inspire and empower women, and we congratulate all of the athletes who conquered the course and proved they are true Iron Girls.”

The 2013 Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon served as the third and final event of the TriColumbia Iron Girl Triple Crown Series. More than 300 women participated in three TriColumbia Iron Girl events in 2013 to claim this special honor, including the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon in April, the Athleta Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon in August and Sunday’s Iron Girl Rocky Gap Triathlon.
