Matt Landes 15th at W.Va. tournament

Keyser teammate Travis Smith 24th in Class AA

WHEELING, W.Va. — Keyser's Matt Landes, participating in the West Virginia state golf tournament for the second year in a row, finished tied for 15th in Class AA with a two-day total of 171.

Teammate Travis Smith, making his first appearance, came in 24th with a 177.

Landes, a senior, opened the 36-hole tournament played under ideal conditions on the Robert Trent Jones course at Oglebay Park with an 87 and returned on Wednesday to shoot an 84. Smith, a junior, opened with an 88 and shot 89 during the second round. Both rounds were held under mostly sunny skies with an occasional light breeze.

Moorefield's Tanner Carr, a junior, finished with 203, shooting 99 and 104, in Class A.

Roane County, led by defending individual champion Alston Spears, repeated as the Class AA champion by shooting 458 as Spears once again claimed the individual title with a 148, firing rounds of 72 and 76. The Raiders dominated, leading by 23 strokes after the first round with a 228 and then shot 230 to win by 38. Poca, with a 496, finished as the runner-up for the fourth year in a row.

Charleston Catholic won its third-straight Class A state championship, fifth out of the last seven, and seventh overall (AA/A champions in 1999, 2001) by defeating Madonna 473-483. The Blue Dons won their only title in 2010 and have finished as the runner-up every year since.

Wheeling Park, which led by seven over Cabell Midland and Shady Spring after the first day, held on to win its third Class AAA title in four years by beating Cabell Midland 472-477. Shady Spring was third at 478.

Madonna's Michael Rogers was the Class A individual champion with a 152 and Wheeling Park's Cole Hand's 149 was the best in AAA.
