Mackie’s four-goal day sends BW past Frankfort

CUMBERLAND — Haven Mackie scored the first four goals of the afternoon and Austin Crotts pitched a shutout in goal as Bishop Walsh won for the second time in as many days, beating Frankfort 5-0 in high school boys soccer Tuesday at Brother Stephen F. Paul Spartan Stadium.

Mackie, a junior forward, scored an unassisted goal with 33:40 left in the opening half, and made it 2-0 with a goal 30 minutes later on a feed from Will Giles.

In the second half, Mackie scored on an assist by Jakob Dale with 30:50 to go, and scored on another assist from Giles a few minutes later to make it 4-0.

Giles got the final goal of the day, unassisted, with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Crotts, a sophomore goalikeeper, stopped six of Frankfort’s seven shot attempts for the shutout. Frankfort goalie Stafford Cessna stopped 12 of the Spartans’ 19 shots. Bishop Walsh held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Spartans (2-0)  play again Friday, hosting Hope for Hyndman Charter School in a varsity only match at 4 o’clock.

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Ryan Mowery tied a school record by scoring five goals and Hampshire scored seven times in the first half in a victory over Pendleton County.

Mowery set the tempo by scoring the first two goals within a minute of each other seven minutes into the first half. He would finish with four goals in the opening half and added another in the second.

Zach Davis made it 3-0 off of a Jordan Lee assist, and Stephen Pugh assisted Jordan Richardson to make it 4-0. Davis assisted Mowery and then scored off of a Jacob Harrison feed to make it 6-0 before Mowery finished off the half with an unassisted goal.

Pendleton’s Shawn Chan scored unassisted in the first minute of the second half, but Hampshire got two goals from Chase Bookwalter and one each from Mowery and Lee to make it an 11-1 final.

Hampshire led in shots 31-3 and in corner kicks 6-1.

Isaak Lambert made two saves in goal for the Trojans and Lyon Detmar had 15 for th Wildcats.

Hampshire (1-1)  plays again Tuesday at Keyser at 6 p.m.

  • Carr has 10 RBIs as Northern splits pair

    HANCOCK — Brooks Carr hit two home runs and drove in 10 runs on the day as Northern split a pair of games at the Hancock Easter Classic, beating Broadfording Academy 26-1 before losing to St. James 10-6. Against Broadfording, Carr hit a three-run homer in a 10run first inning, and also had a two-run double, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to finish with seven RBIs. He also teamed with Brett Oates on a four-inning no-hitter. Carr struck out seven over the first three innings and Oates fanned two in the fourth.
