Maplehurst hosting Boggs Cup

FROSTBURG — The 20th annual Carroll Boggs Cup, pitting 12-man teams from Cumberland and Maplehurst country clubs in weekend matches in memory of the late CCC professional, begins today with 36 holes of play at Maplehurst.

Maplehurst, which won last year’s match 12 1/2 to 11 1/2 at Cumberland, will be seeking a third straight victory. Cumberland still holds the lead in the series, 10-8-1.

Saturday’s play begins with fourball matches at 9 a.m. The foursomes matches start at 2:30. On Sunday, singles matches begin at noon.

The 12-man teams and past results are listed in today’s Scoreboard section at right.


FSU teams run to 7th-place finishes at Galen Piper Invite

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Frostburg State men’s and women’s cross country teams ran to seventh-place finishes in the Galen Piper Invitational at Shippensburg University.

Casey Columbus led all FSU runners, placing 40th in the women’s race in 16:32. Bryn Alston was 65th in 17:28.

Pat Mead led the men by finishing 77th in 21:02. Former Mountain Ridge standout Brandon Redmond was 82nd in 21:26.

FSU will run in the St. Vincent Invitational on Sept. 21.


Altoona beats Bobcats in 4 sets

ALTOONA, Pa. — Morgan Hoover had a match-high 10 kills and Aimee Petrides had nine kills and 12 digs, but Penn State Altoona outlasted Frostburg State for a 3-1 volleyball victory on Wednesday night.

The Lions won the match by scores of 25-9, 25-18, 20-25 and 25-22.

April Wolfe had a team high 14 digs and eight kills. Hoover also had five digs and two blocks and Petrides had two aces.

The Bobcats will host a tri-match Saturday at Bobcat Arena and opens play with a match against Cairn at noon.


Local golfers fare well at Sunnehanna

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — John Blank finished runner-up and Slug Armstrong was eighth in their respective divisions in the Sunnehanna Senior Golf Invitational.

Blank continued his strong play by finishing second in another battle with Ted Smith in the Super Senior Division. Blank had rounds of 74, 75 and 72 for a 221 total on the par-70 layout. Smith, of Wilkinson, Ind., won with rounds of 69, 75 and 70 for a 214.

In the Senior Division, Armstrong tied for eighth with last year’s champion, Don Erickson of Dubois, and Doug Williams of Los Angeles at 220. Armstrong shot rounds of 72, 74 and 74. Sam Lewis, of Montrose, won with a 211 and rounds of 68, 74 and 69.

Blank and Armstrong, of Frostburg, are scheduled to play in the Senior Azalea Invitational at the Charleston (S.C.) Country Club Oct. 2-4.

    HANCOCK — Brooks Carr hit two home runs and drove in 10 runs on the day as Northern split a pair of games at the Hancock Easter Classic, beating Broadfording Academy 26-1 before losing to St. James 10-6. Against Broadfording, Carr hit a three-run homer in a 10run first inning, and also had a two-run double, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to finish with seven RBIs. He also teamed with Brett Oates on a four-inning no-hitter. Carr struck out seven over the first three innings and Oates fanned two in the fourth.
