Calvary breaks school record, finishes fifth in national tournament

DAYTON, Tenn. — Austin Heavner converted a penalty kick early in the first half and the defense did the rest as Calvary Christian beat Chattanooga Christian, 1-0, for fifth place in the 24-team National Association of Christian Athletes national tournament.

The win was a school-record 22nd of the season for coach Ryan Chaney’s Eagles (22-4). The 22 wins broke the previous school record of 21, set by the 2003 team and matched by the 2004 team. Chaney was a player on both of those teams, which were coached by Geoff Wheeler.

Josh Snyder drew the Chattanooga foul in the penalty area in the eighth minute to set the stage for Heavner’s kick. Calvary dominated in shots, 15-1, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Matt Dillow got the shutout without having to make a save.

Junior defender Tyler Michael was named to the all-tournament team after leading an Eagles defense that allowed only one goal and had four shutouts in five tournament games.

“We gave up only one goal and were the only team to allow one goal or less in the whole tournament,’’ said Chaney. “It was a good tournament. We had good fan support and just a great year overall.”

Calvary’s only loss came to tournament runner-up Trinity (Ala.). After playing to a scoreless draw, Trinity won on penalty kicks, 5-3.
