Southern rallies to beat Miners, 41-33

FROSTBURG — Southern Garrett wrestlers reeled off six wins in the final eight matches to defeat Mountain Ridge 41-33 in their Thursday match at Mountain Ridge.

The Miners had taken an early lead after Adam Martz (138-pound class), Justin Bryant (145), Nick Shifflett (152) and Tyler Maynard (160) won the first four matches.

Southern’s strong finish began with John Zimmerman (195) getting a forfeit win. Brian Rinker (220) and Scott Cooper (285) followed with pins, and Devin Hamrick (106) won a technical fall to give the Rams four wins in a row.

Austin Shaffer (120) and Zach Tichnell (132) got the final two wins by pinfall, with Tichnell’s the last of the night.

Seth Kisner (170) also won with a pin for Southern.

Martz, Maynard and Austin Clark (182) earned pins for the Miners while Bryant, Shifflett and J.T. Thomas won decisions.

Mountain Ridge wrestles again at Frankfort on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Southern is competing in the Fort Hill Super Duals this weekend.
