Frostburg Elks hold Hoop Shoot

FROSTBURG — Morgan Edwards, who last year won local, district, state and regional titles and competed in the National Hoop Shoot for the second time in Springfield, Mass., successfully defended his local title by winning the boys 12/13 division in the Frostburg Elks Hoop Shoot held recently at the Armory.

Edwards won his division with the best score of the day, making 23 out of 25.

 Nathan Howard won the boys 8/9 division, with Bryce Snyder and Kaleb Richards tying for second and Colin Lowry placed third. Abigal Maddy placed first in the girls 8/9 division. Timmy Sterne won the boys 10/11 division and Emma Stafford won the girls 10/11 division.  Edwards won the boys 12/13 division, with Brant Hughes was runner-up to Edwards in the boys 12/13 division.

The winners in each division advance to the West District Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at Whittier Elementary School in Frederick.

K of C Hoop Shoot Saturday at BW

CUMBERLAND — The annual Cumberland Council No. 586 Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot Competition for the Cumberland, LaVale and surrounding areas will be held Saturday, 1 to 2:30 p.m., at Bishop Walsh School.

The competition is open to both boys and girls in 10 different age categories, with no entry fee required. The winners will receive certificates and then advance to the District Championship to follow at 2:30. The State Tournament times and places are to be announced later. Fore Sisters MGA to meet Saturday

LAVALE — There will be a breakfast meeting for all current and prospective Fore Sisters Golf Club MGA members on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 8 a.m., at the Ponderosa Steakhouse.

A meeting with election of officers for the upcoming year will be held after the breakfast.

 

FSU’s Carroll qualifies for ECAC’s

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Frostburg State’s Morgan Carroll qualified for the ECAC Championships with a mark of 1.6 meters in the high jump at the Bison Open at Bucknell University over the weekend.

Carroll, who finished fifth in the high jump and ninth in the 500-meter run (1:24.48) was the top FSU performer at the Bucknell meet. The Bobcats split their teams, with a portion competing at Bucknell and another group at Lebanon Valley.

Also at Bucknell, Percy Haskins was sixth in the long jump (6.28 meters) and Myles Burgess sixth in the triple jump (12.86 meters). Haskins was also ninth in the 60 hurdles (8.96 seconds).

Also earning top-10s were Torez Cooke, eighth in the 60 hurdles (8.95) and Chris Rickell, ninth in the high jump (1.84 meters).

Meanwhile, at the Lebanon Valley Indoor Invitational, FSU posted four top-five finishes and a dozen top-10s.

Chris Buckland led the way with a second-place in the shot put with a career best mark of 13 meters. Seth Stine was eighth with a toss of 11.36.

James Revered was fourth in the triple jump (10.90) and eighth in the long jump (5.04) and Giovanni Fitch took sixth in the weight throw (11.91).

Among the runners, Gavin Caupp was fourth in the 3,000 (9:25.19) and Pat Mead was sixth (9:46.47). Matt Collins was fifth in the 500 (1:14.19), Anthony Hayden seventh in the 800 (2:11.89) and Sterling Hardy eighth in the 800 (2:13.37).

For the women, Russia Tatum was sixth in the 55 dash (8.22), and in the weight throw, Casi Chisholm took seventh in the weight throw (9.10 meters) and Katie Hoag 10th (6.85).

Frostburg State travels to Mount Union for the Jim Wuske Invitational next Saturday at 10 a.m.
