Clemson-Maryland game has local tie

COLLEGE PARK — A familiar face to Western Maryland will be on the sidelines today at the Comcast Center when Maryland takes on Clemson in college men’s basketball.

Dick Bender, of Grantsville and a former standout at Northern Garrett High, Garrett College and McDaniel College, is in his third season as an assistant to Clemson head coach Brad Brownell. Bender is the director of basketball operations.

Bender had 25 years of collegiate coaching experience when he joined the Clemson staff in 2010. He began his coaching career under Ellerslie native Royce Waltman at DePauw (Ind.) University in 1987. DePauw was ranked No. 1 in the Division III ranks twice during his time there and was runner-up in the national tournament in 1990.

Bender also has coached at Radford (Va.), Indiana State and Tulane.

Clemson is 51-39 in the two-plus years since Bender’s arrival. This year, the Tigers are 13-12 overall and 5-8 in the ACC, with four of the conference losses coming by five points or less. The Tigers lost to No. 3 Gonzaga 57-49 early in the season and to No. 2 Miami 45-43 last Sunday.

Today’s game is scheduled to be televised by ESPN2 at noon.
