RICHMOND, Va. — Luis Rios went 4 for 5 and doubled home the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh to lift Garrett to an 11-10 win over Jamestown (N.Y.) Sunday in junior college baseball Sunday afternoon.
The Lakers beat St. Clair (Mich.) later in the day, 4-3, on a complete-game performance by Bryor Weiss.
In the first game, Garrett trailed 10-7 and rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to get their first win of the season. With two outs, Jonathan Crucey had a pinch-hit, two-run single to bring the Lakers to within 10-9, and Rios followed with a two-run double to put the Lakers on top.
Joe Mascolo retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning and got the win with three hitless innings of relief. He struck out four.
Rios hit three doubles and a single to lead an 18-hit attack. Zach Dinges and Michael Drake had three hits each.
In the second game, Weiss, a freshman right-hander, scattered six hits and struck out five in going the distance for his first collegiate win.
Dinges had RBI doubles and in the fourth and sixth innings for Garrett, which took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed.
The Lakers (2-5) will play a 2 p.m. single game at Garrett on Tuesday.
Frostburg State 7
Franklin & Marshall 6
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Nick McElfish, who came into the game as a defensive replacement, left as the offensive hero with a perfect suicide squeeze bunt in the 10th inning that plated the go-ahead run in Frostburg State’s win over Franklin & Marshall.
Frostburg State (5-3) tied the game 6-6 on an RBI single by Kevin Kean in the ninth inning, then took the lead in the 10th. Danny Morris was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and after a single by Zach Keeler and a sacrifice by Pat Sapp, McElfish squeezed home Morris on the second pitch he saw to break the tie.
Kenny Georgius, who struck out four in two hitless relief innings, got the win, improving to 3-0 on the young season. Starter Curtis Randall allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
Morris and Kean had three hits and two RBIs, and Kean also stole three bases to lead the offense. Ryan McGuigan doubled and singled.
Will Benenson hit a two-run triple and and two singles for the Diplomats (0-2).
Potomac State wins pair
FLORENCE, S.C. — Potomac State defeated Cecil, 6-3 and USC-Lancaster, 8-4 in Florence, S.C.
Elliot McCummings had a single and two RBIs and Ron Musto to singles and an RBI.
Tanner Everton pitched the first five innings, allowed three runs and struck out five with no walks, for the win.
In the second game, winning pitcher Scott Fox drove in a pair of runs to help the Cats beat USC-Lancaster. He scattered three hits and fanned six in five innings to earn the win.
Tre Kerns belted a triple and double, scored two runs and knocked in another to lead the offense. Fox had two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs and Frankie Wilson two singles and two RBIs.
Potomac State (3-4) lost to Heartland Community College 10-2 on Sunday. The Catamounts hope to make their home debut Thursday against Genesee at 2 p.m.
