Verna P. Gowans [Accident]
Verna P. Gowans, 75, of Old Engle Mill Road, Accident, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 6, 1933, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Amanda M. (Coleman) Hughes. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosie Gardner, and four brothers, Frederick Hughes, Thomas Hughes, John “Jack” Hughes and Robert Hughes.
She was Lutheran by faith. She worked as a cook at Little Sandy’s Restaurant, Keysers Ridge, and was a concession stand operator at Sandy Point State Park.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Gowans; one daughter, Roberta Stewart, of Accident; one son, Thomas S. Gowans, of Newburg, W.Va.; one sister, Elaine Hughes, of Lonaconing; one brother, Ricky Hughes, of Lonaconing; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St., Oakland, Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Spiker officiating.
Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing.
