Alvin Thomas Lewis [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Alvin Thomas Lewis, 77, of Cumberland, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Latrobe, Pa.
Born March 12, 1932, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Andrew F. and Catherine R. (Rowan) Lewis. In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by Daisy Lewis, whom he called mother.
Mr. Lewis was retired from PPG Industries as a Senior Design Draftsman. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. Alvin was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene where he served on many church boards both locally and at the district level. He also worked the bookstore at the summer camp for the church for 30 years. He was an avid bird lover, craftsman and Redskins Football fan. Alvin was a patient advocate at WMHS-Memorial Campus and also volunteered for the United Cerebral Palsy of Cumberland.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Barbara Ann Lewis; two daughters, Victoria Lynn Lewis Pia and husband Michael, of Palmyra, Va. and Cheryl Campbell and James Zecca, of Purcellville, Va.; three sons, Craig A. Lewis and wife Kathy Jo, of Winchester, Va., Stanley M. Lewis and wife Kimberly, of Connecticut and Eric T. Lewis and wife Krista, of Ridgeley, W.Va.; two sisters, Doris Bohall and husband Rev. Gerald Bohall, of Richmond, Va. and Maxine Eyring and husband William, of North Carolina; two brothers, Earle Lewis and wife Audrey, of Norfolk, Va. and Rev. Ernest Lewis and wife Linda, of Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren, Lori Ann Roberts and husband Bryan, Bryan Sutherland, Cheri Bennett and husband Randy, Lanea Shank and husband Carl, Robert Lewis and wife Lydia and Susan Lewis; six great-grandchildren, Cameron and Warren Roberts, Chloe and Skylar Bennett and Gavin and Madison Shank; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, scarpellifuneralhomes.com on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the First Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gary W. Barkley officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.
Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard at the church.
At his request, his body will be cremated.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Alvins memory may do so by making a memorial contribution to the First Church of the Nazarene, 508 E. Oldtown Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
