RAWLINGS — A 34-year-old Keyser, W.Va. man was arrested after stealing merchandise from Sears and leading police on a chase Saturday morning, according to Maryland State Police.

Police received a lookout for Bernard Shelley Atkins, Jr., who fled the County Club Mall parking lot in a Jeep Cherokee after committing felony theft in the store, police said.

Atkins’ vehicle was observed on U.S. Route 220 where he was attempting to pass vehicles on the shoulder at the intersection of at North Bel Air Drive, according to police reports. Atkins failed to stop for Tfc. C. Whitaker and drove into private field north of state Route 956.

After a brief foot pursuit, Atkins was apprehended in an outbuilding on the south side of a residence, police said. He was charged with theft of more than $500, fleeing and eluding, negligent driving, failure to drive right of center and driving off the roadway while passing vehicles. He was being held on a $25,000 bond.
