Douglas Dwight Shook [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Douglas Dwight Shook, 63, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 5, 1945 in Cumberland, Mr. Shook was the son of the late Neil R. Shook and Margie (Harrison) Shook. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Daryl Shook.

Doug was a graduate and avid fan of Allegany High School where he played baseball for two years and basketball for three years winning the state championship in 1963 playing as point guard. Doug also attended Allegany College of Maryland and was a graduate of Catherman’s Business School. Doug served in the United States Army Reserves from 1966-1969.

An enthusiastic sports fan, Doug spent many years involved in various ways with different community sports organizations. He was president of the Rocking Chair League, the Pen-Mar Baseball League and the City Fast Pitch League. He also played shortstop for many teams over 24 years before coaching. Doug enjoyed coaching the LaSalle High School Basketball Team, the Dapper Dan Little League Braves, the Church League Basketball, the Hot Stove Baseball League and the Youth Raiders Football Team. Doug later joined the local IABO Board as a referee for 14 years. He has attended more than 60 homecoming games.

Doug was best known for the time he devoted to organizing local basketball tournaments. Starting with the Gold Medal Tournament, which he donated his time for over 15 years, he founded and directed the Silver Hoop Classic Basketball Tournament for the last 26 years. Doug raised funds for many local community organizations.

Doug was co-founder and manager of All-Seasons Sports Center from 1973-1978. He also worked as the Dispatcher for both Yellow Cab Company and Morgan Cab Company. Doug also has spent many years caring for his beloved grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his wife of 30 years, Robin (Welch) Shook; his children, Marty Douglas Shook and wife Shannon, Cumberland, Richelle Printy and husband Jeff, Frostburg and Alexis Shook, Cumberland; his grandchildren, Alyssa Shook, Dylan Printy, Alise Shook, Zackary Shook, and Jacob Printy; his brothers, Neil R. Shook, Cumberland, Gary Shook and wife Judy, Martinsburg, W.Va., Wayne Shook and wife Judy, Ronald Shook and friend, Donna, Paul Shook and wife Brenda and Marshall Shook and wife Vicki, all of Cumberland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St,, Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ted Marsh officiating.

Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Vandenberg, Junior Eversole, Rich Shook, Paul Fradiska, Marshall Shook II, Jason Shook, P.J. Shook and Jared Fradiska. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Ackerman, Gary Powell, Steve Lee and Buddy Meade.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to J.D. Hook, his favorite Allegany High School Football Player.
