SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Virginia Mae Spencer, 89, of Short Gap, died Sunday, May 17, 2009 at The Dawnview Center.

Born Dec. 2, 1919 in Mineral Co., W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jessie L. and Cora Mae (Hott) Holloway.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Ervin D. Spencer; one sister, Margaret DeLawder; and six brothers, William, Charles, Ira, Harry, Walter and Jessie Holloway.

Virginia was 12 years old when her mother died. She helped raise her siblings and completed high school.

Mrs. Spencer was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women. She had served as secretary and treasurer of Bible School and the church. She was president of the Short Gap Senior Citizens for 12 years. When the new Frankfort Senior Center was built, she served as a volunteer. In addition, both Mr. and Mrs. Spencer had been long-time volunteers at Heartland of Keyser and belonged to the Woodmen of the World, Lodge 6.

After her children left home, Mrs. Spencer took up quilting. She made six quilts, one for each of her great-grandchildren, depicting the events of September 11th. She also enjoyed ceramic and knitting lessons, as well as crochet work.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Zembower and husband Thomas, Cumberland; her son, Larry Spencer and wife Carol Ann, Memphis, Tenn.; one brother, James Holloway and wife Thelma, Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren, MarLisa Isgro and husband Russell, LeAnna Ferguson and husband Clayborne, Jennifer Garrison and husband Michael, Christian Zembower and wife Laurie and Shelby Snyder; five great-grandchildren, Jessica and Michala Garrison, Samuel and Ava Isgro and Tristan Ferguson.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby (1-888-724-2251) on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Martha Ognibene officiating.

Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Edward Riley, Dale Riley, Wendall Wagoner, Michael Garrison, Ray Chaney and Robert Holloway.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church or to the food pantry at the church, Route 2, Box 421, Ridgeley, WV 26753.
