Cole, Zapf wedding

Cumberland Times-News

ST. MICHAELS — Lauren Sloan Zapf and Zachary Keith Cole were united in marriage Sept. 8, 2007. The double ring ceremony took place at Harbourtowne Golf Resort in St. Michaels in a casual late afternoon, outdoor ceremony overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

The bride is the daughter of Margy Maloney and Bill Zapf, both of Cumberland, and the stepdaughter of the late Bill Maloney. The groom is the son of Thomas Cole (Capt., United States Navy, retired) and Denise Cole of Virginia Beach, Va.

Serving as maid and matron of honor, respectively, were the bride’s sisters, Bridgid Harchick of Germantown and Allison Watkins of Cumberland. Jessica Hohenwarter, of Richmond, Va., served as a bridesmaid.

Serving as best man was the groom’s friend, John Majewski, Chicago, Ill. Groomsmen were Greg Dusetzina, San Diego, Calif., and James “Trip” Ferguson, Schenectady, N.Y.

The flower girl was Adele Zapf, niece of the bride. The ring bearer was Landon Watkins, nephew of the bride.

The bride was escorted to the altar by her mother. She wore a beaded linen gown with crystal-encrusted star-fish flip-flops. Her jewelry included a single pearl necklace and Mikimoto pearl earrings, borrowed from the bride’s mother and an original gift from the bride’s stepfather to the bride’s mother. Music for the ceremony was provided by the St. Charles String Quartet.

A reception followed at Harbourtowne Golf Resort with hors d’oeuvres served on the bay patio with music accompaniment by the St. Charles String Quartet. Following a dinner in the Bayview Restaurant, DJ Ken Berger provided music. The groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner for the couple at St. Michaels Winery. The groom’s brother and honorary best man, Justin Cole, who was stationed in Iraq at the time of the wedding, provided a surprise toast to the couple during the dinner via a previously recorded video.

Due to the couple completing a scenic cross-country trip from California shortly before the wedding, they decided to delay their honeymoon until their one-year anniversary. They plan on celebrating their anniversary with a Mediterranean cruise to Spain, France, Malta and Italy.

Lauren is a graduate of Bishop Walsh High School and the United States Naval Academy, where she graduated in 2003 with a degree in political science. She served onboard two ships, including her last tour onboard the USS Princeton, stationed in San Diego. Lauren is currently a lieutenant working at Military Sealift Command Headquarters, Washington, D.C.

Zach graduated from Salem High School in Virginia Beach and the United States Naval Academy in 2002 with a degree in computer science. Zach was stationed onboard the USS Oak Hill in Virginia Beach prior to completing his master’s degree in physics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., where he graduated with distinction in June of 2007. Zach is currently a lieutenant working at the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Va.

The couple resides in Centreville, Va.

Zach and Lauren would like to thank all of their friends and family who attended the wedding.
