Davis, Mathews wedding

CUMBERLAND — Shane Robert Davis and Emily Jean Mathews were united in marriage at 3 o’clock in the afternoon on Nov. 17, 2012, at the Church of St. Patrick in Cumberland. The bride’s cousin, Monsignor Arthur Valenzano, presided over the double ring ceremony.

Emily is the daughter of Jerry and Teresa Mathews of Cumberland, and the granddaughter of Frank and Doris Taccino of Frostburg and the late Charles and Laverne Mathews of Cumberland.

Shane is the son of Robert and Judy Davis of Clearfield, Pa., and the grandson of Clyde and Eleanor Shifter of Clearfield and the late Frank and Emma Davis of Clearfield.

The bride was given away by her parents, and escorted down the aisle by her father. She wore an ivory champagne sleeveless, allover beaded lace trumpet gown with an empire waist, designed by David’s Bridal. She also wore an ivory, cathedral-length veil trimmed in lightly beaded Alencon lace, designed by Bel Aire Bridals. She carried a bouquet of assorted ivory, burnt orange, peach, and brown silk fall flowers.

Jenna Gorgol, sister of the bride, served as the matron of honor. She wore a spaghetti-strapped, charcoal gray floor-length chiffon dress with a lightly beaded twist-front bust.  She carried an arm bouquet of silk fall flowers accented with peach, silk ribbon. Bridesmaids were Chelsea Kovalick, Rebecca Hauser, Caroline Dumm and Stacy Yaworski, friends of the bride. The bridesmaids wore strapless charcoal gray floor-length chiffon dresses with a satin ruffle extending the length of the dresses. They carried simple silk bouquets of either dark yellow or burnt orange fall flowers accented with ivory ribbon and burlap. All of the bouquets were arranged by the bride and her sister and mother.

The groom wore a black tuxedo with ivory vest and tie. Tyler Davis, brother of the groom, served as best man. Groomsmen were Joe Davis, cousin of the groom, Garrett Mathews, brother of the bride, and Kurt Miller and Max Condon, friends of the groom. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos and charcoal gray vests and ties, as well as peach and ivory carnation boutonnieres, arranged by Martin’s Floral.

Music for the ceremony was provided by Mark Steiner on the piano and organ, and Jeff Widdows performing the vocals.  Patricia Aaron, violinist, entertained guests inside the church prior to the ceremony. Special moments, as well as candid shots, were captured by cousin of the bride and photographer Edward Dewitt. Anne Mathews, also cousin of the bride, was the videographer for the day.

A reception was held immediately following the wedding at the Allegany Museum in Cumberland. The couple was escorted to the reception by the matron of honor and best man in a pick-up truck filled with hay bales and pumpkins. The couple danced their first dance to Brad Paisley’s, “Then.” The bride danced with her father to Rascal Flatts’, “My Wish.” The groom danced to Kenny Chesney’s, “Don’t Blink” with his mother.  A special song was also dedicated to the bride’s brother, Garrett, and bride’s cousin, Corey Mathews, to thank them for giving up a previously planned hunting trip to Colorado to attend the wedding. Music Express of Frostburg provided the music for the evening, and the couple and their guests danced long into the night.

Sherry Holstine and her staff of Olive Catering prepared the delicious food for the evening, beginning with appetizers that included a self-serve chili bar. Next, a meal of barbecued pork sandwiches, chicken alfredo, coleslaw, baked potatoes, and green beans was served. Deacon Loren Mooney, friend of the couple, offered the blessing over the meal. The couple cut into a decadent cake of alternating layers of carrot and pumpkin cake covered in buttercream icing, courtesy of Jeanie Culley. Cranberry apple and peach cobbler were also provided by the caterer.

Two bridal showers were given in the bride’s honor. One of the beautiful showers was hosted by Judy Davis, mother of the groom. It was a tea-party style at The Strawberry Tree in Curwensville, Pa.  The other shower was hosted by Jenna Gorgol and bridesmaids, and was held at Harrigan’s Restaurant and Lounge at the Holiday Inn in Cumberland.

The couple spent a week long honeymoon basking in the sun and sand of Siesta Key, Fla.

Emily is employed as a physician assistant at Health Matters Urgent Care in Cumberland, and Shane is employed as a mathematics and physics teacher at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland.

Shane and Emily sincerely thank their family and friends for all the hard work that was poured into making their wedding journey so memorable.

A special thanks is also extended to all the Pennsylvania bear hunters and the Maryland deer hunters who gave up a November Saturday to help the couple celebrate their day.
