VanGarven-Niland vows exchanged one year ago

FREDERICK — Today Marney and Chris celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

On Nov. 3, 2012, Marney Jean Niland and Christopher L. VanGarven were united in marriage. The ceremony took place at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick, with the Rev. Dr. Glenn Schoenberger of Stone Harbor, N.J., and the Rev. Dr. Robert Driver-Bishop of Frederick, presiding.

Marney Jean is the daughter of James “Hum” and Reba (Getty) Niland of LaVale. Christopher is the son of Willard “Bill” and Connie VanGarven of Frederick and the grandson of Dorothy Hansen of Ellendale, N.D.

The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father and wore an ivory chiffon gown. Marney’s elbow-length veil was trimmed in pearl beads. Her pearl earrings were a gift from her parents.  Her pearl and yellow crystal bracelet was a gift created by her sister, Jenny. The bride carried a loosely tied bouquet of yellow freesia, yellow gerbera daisies, yellow solidago and white Monte Casino.

Serving as bridal attendants were Marney’s sisters, Abbey Jane Niland of Baltimore and Jenny Lee (Niland) Rex of Lemoyne, Pa. Abbey and Jenny wore gowns in espresso-brown chiffon and carried bouquets of yellow freesia, yellow solidago and yellow and red gerbera daisies.

Serving as best man was Dustin C. VanGarven of Denver, Colo. Yuriy Avramov of Washington, D.C., was groomsman. Ushers were Nathan Chapman of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Adam Gilbert, Jack Reickel and Joe Reilly, all of Frederick.

Scripture readings in the wedding ceremony were read by Tiffany Holmberg of Frederick, friend of the bride; Erin Youle of Grand Forks, N.D., cousin of the groom, and John Schoenberger of Royersford, Pa., friend of the bride.

Altar flower arrangements were woodsy creations with yellow and white flowers on twigs. Memorial flowers were seven yellow gerbera daisies in loving memory of John O. “Jack” and Jean Getty, Edmund and Mary Louise Niland, grandparents of the bride, and Willard and Irene VanGarven, Llewellyn Lynde and Emery Hansen, grandparents of the groom.

The wedding reception followed the ceremony and was held at Alexander’s in Buckeystown. Decorations followed the woodsy theme with a yellow and chocolate-brown decor, including various centerpieces of twigs, assorted yellow flowers or lemons.

The lemon-lush wedding cake was topped with a ceramic bride and groom, performing a “high-five” in imitation of the “high-five” by Marney and Chris at the conclusion of their wedding ceremony at the church. Guests were served cupcakes in lemon, salted-caramel, red velvet or vanilla.

Marney and Chris honeymooned last year in Costa Rica.

The couple currently reside in Frederick.
