Charles D. Breighner [Oldtown]

OLDTOWN - Charles Daniel Breighner, 59, of Oldtown, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, at his son's home, following a long illness with cancer.

Born June 30, 1949, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Gerald Breighner and Virginia Breighner Martin.

Charles was a retired employee of the Cumberland Fire Department, where he served 27 years.

Following his retirement, he became a licensed private pilot, where he spent many hours flying aircraft with the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport Flying Club, and maintaining many of the aircraft that he owned. He also enjoyed spending time on his farm. In his youth, he was a member of the Cumberland Continentals Civil War Reenactment Unit, where he was a bugler from 1962-1965.

He was preceded in death by brothers John and Richard Breighner, and stepfather Robert H. Martin.

He is survived by his sons, Eric Breighner and wife Kathleen, and Brian Breighner and wife Erica, all of Cumberland; brother Russell Breighner and wife Margaret, of Arlington, Va.; sisters Jean Rice and husband Donald, of Cumberland, Anne White and husband James, of Louisville, Ohio, Alice Mackereth and husband Brian, of Cumberland, and Phyllis Twigg, of Carpenteria, Calif.; grandchildren Lauren E. Breighner, Kaitlyn A. Wharton, Ava E. Breighner and Claire E. Breighner; and several nieces and nephews.

At his request, his body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com) Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Following the service the Cumberland Fire Department will also conduct a memorial service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Western Maryland Health System Home Hospice.
