ARNOLD - Fourth-seeded Garrett upset No. 1 Hagerstown Saturday in the Maryland JUCO Semifinals to set up a rematch with Allegany College of Maryland today in the finals.
Mindy Sharp sported a double-double with 12 rebounds and 12 points, and Shanika Jeffers paced the Lakers with 14 points. Tegra Hillman had a solid all-around performance with 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals. Blaire Bradley dished out nine assists.
The Hawks were led by Latoya Buckner's 29 points, but no other Hagerstown player reached double digits and only five players were able to score at all. Garrett, on the other hand, had 10 of its players score.
The Lakers were able to get out to a quick lead, and were able to hold the Hawks at a distance for most of the night. Garrett led 38-25 at halftime, and outscored Hagerstown 21-17 in the second.
According to Thea Garland, Garrett's head coach, the Lakers are anxious to have another shot at the Trojans, one of only three teams to beat them.
"We are looking forward to the rematch with Allegany," said Garland. "We were a few players short the first time around and are looking for a chance to redeem the earlier loss."
The Lakers lost to Allegany 77-58 on Jan. 28.
Garrett (21-3) and Allegany play for the Maryland JUCO title tonight at 7 p.m., at Anne Arundel Community College.
