Scheffel, Ozias lead Rams in holiday tournament

SOUTHMORELAND, Pa. - George Scheffel and Lex Ozias won division championships, with Scheffel also being named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler, in leading the Southern Rams to a third-place finish in the 24-team Southmoreland Holiday Tournament.

Norwin won the team title with 194 points, followed by Greenville at 174 1/2 and Southern at 168 1/2. Northern Bedford was fourth with 164 and Forrest Hills rounded out the top five at 139 1/2.

* Scheffel was named the outstanding wrestler after defeating Tom McVicker of Forrest Hills in a 5-4 decision in the 125-pound division finals. McVicker had been a Pennsylvania state tournament placewinner last season.

* Ozias, a freshman, ran his personal record to 10-0 by defeating Tim Connoly of Gateway, 4-0, in the 112 title match.

Other Southern wrestlers faring well were Nicholas Brant, Jakob Scheffel, Josh Arnold, Jordan Skipper, Davey Sweitzer and Matt Armstrong.

* Brant finished second in the 135 class, dropping a 7-2 decision to Phil Steinberg of Central Cambria in the finals.

* Jakob Scheffel, a freshman, improved his record to 11-1 by placing third in the 130 class, losing only to top-seeded Glenn Winslow of Cambria Heights, 3-1 in overtime.

* Arnold, 119, finished third for the second year in a row, losing his only match to Pennsylvania state placewinner Dave Fogel of Forrest Hills.

Skipper finished fourth at 145, Sweitzer was fifth at 140, and Armstrong took fifth at 103.

Southern, currently ranked No. 3 behind only McDonough and Mt. St. Joe in the Maryland state poll, wrestles at Williamsport tonight at 6:45.
