Southern takes first AMAC title

CUMBERLAND - With five individual champions on its roster, Southern finished 6-0 to win the first Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at Fort Hill.

Two Rams claimed the titles in the two lightest weight classes, with Matt Armstrong winning the 103-pound division and Lex Ozias taking taking the 112 class. Armstrong finished 6-0 with five pins, and Ozias was 5-0 with four pins. George Scheffel won all six of his matches, collecting three pins to win the 125.

Nick Farmer won the 171-pound class for Southern after going 5-0 with three pins, and Sean Sisler finished 5-1 with four pins to win the 285 division.

Mountain Ridge finished in second after losing its first match of the year to the Rams. Following the Miners were Northern, Keyser, Fort Hill and Allegany placed sixth. Frankfort finished seventh.

Aaron Patterson gave the Miners their only individual championship by going 6-0 with three pins in the 135-pound class.

The Huskies won three individual championships beginning in the 119 division with Josh Duckworth. Duckworth finished 5-1 with four pins. Andy Ganoe won the 152 class by going 6-0 and getting three pins, and Dustin Stough went 6-0 with five pins to get first in the 160-pound class.

Tommy Stark (130), Blake Mangold (145) and Jordan Mellott were Keyser's champions. Stark finished 4-2, and Mangold posted a 5-1 mark with three pins. Mellott was also 5-1, with all five wins being pins.

Fort Hill's Dillon Appel finished the tournament 5-1 with three pins to win the 140-pound division. Jake Twigg was Allegany's lone champ in the 215-pound class after going 5-1 with five pins.

Other wrestlers that finished undefeated were: Southern's Josh Arnold, Jacob Scheffel and Nick Brant. Mountain Ridge's Stephen Whetstone and Noah DeVore also finished unbeaten.
