Maryland’s highway bear mortality count for 2009 has risen to 28 with the death of a 244-pound female bruin on state Route 36 at Knapps Meadow in Allegany County on Oct. 6. The Cumberland Times-News tabulation of bear deaths on state roadways is unofficial.



On Oct. 3, a bear was struck on U.S. Route 40 on Red Hill just west of LaVale. The bear was observed for a while by officers of the Natural Resources Police before it left the area on its own.
