Officials of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources say that reference in a letter in Outdoor Mailbox on May 11 that a bear had been struck April 24 on Interstate 68 near Hillcrest Drive just east of Cumberland was incorrect and that the animal was a large black dog. A security official at the Finan Center confirmed that an employee of that facility had struck the canine on the way to work.

Dena L. Green told us that about May 9 or 10 her daughter was delivering the Times-News about 2 a.m. near Braddock Middle School and a small bear began to walk toward her. Her daughter thought she heard another bear and ran to her nearby car and left the area.

Starr Veronick, Rawlings, sent the Times-News an up-close-and-personal photograph of a decent-sized bear on her mother's porch on Mountain Ridge Road, Rawlings, on May 7.
