OAKLAND — Cadence Natividad, a ninth grade honors student at Southern Garrett High School, was named the third place winner of the Department of Maryland American Legion Oratorical Competition in Towson.

Natividad had advanced to state competition by winning the first place completions at both the post and district levels. She prepared a 10-minute oration on the responsibilities of jury duty as outlined in the Constitution of the United States. Each contestant was required to prepare four additional five-minute orations on assigned amendments to the Constitution, with one of the four selected in round two of the event. Natividad was presented with a medal and $750 scholarship. She is the daughter of Miguel and Erin-Ruth Natividad, Oakland.
