ROCKY GAP — The Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery will honor members of the armed services on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m.
American Legion Post 13 and other local honor guard units will present the colors. The Mountain Ridge Jazz Orchestra will perform.
James Marchinke, a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialist, will provide the keynote address. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 will perform a prisoner of war/missing in action round table ceremony.
Marchinke enlisted in the Marine Corps, working in aviation helicopter maintenance. He was stationed at New River, North Carolina, but service took him on three tours of duty in Beirut, Lebanon, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.
When Marchinke transferred to Army aviation helicopter maintenance, he was deployed to Bosnia with the 24th Aviation Brigade, then supported special operations missions in Russia, Ireland, England and France, finally serving as aviation brigade sergeant major and retiring after over 20 years of service.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Army Commendation medals, Army Achievement medals, six Good Conduct medals, Master Aircraft Crewman Badge, Driver’s Badge with Wheel, three Overseas Service ribbons, Rifle and Pistol badges and other unit awards.
Marchinke has served more than 20 years with the Department of Maryland American Legion in leadership positions at the post, county, state and national levels. He was commander for the Department of Maryland American Legion, chairs the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery Committee and is a member of the VFW and the Midland Sportsman Club.
Marchinke holds a Bachelor of Science degree in human resources management. He is married to the former Zelda Clark and has three sons and two granddaughters.
The cemetery will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
