Evelyn A. Schaffer

CUMBERLAND - Evelyn A. Schaffer, 82, of Cumberland, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Born Jan. 5, 1924, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Thomsic) Sivic. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William H. Schaffer, 1982; three brothers, Frank Sivic, John Sivic, Stanley Sivic; three sisters, Frances Wright, Mary Urbas, and Josephine Duckworth.

Mrs. Schaffer was a retired nurse from Cumberland Nursing Home. She was loved for her caring compassion to her patients and her dedicated kindness to everyone. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Sunshine Club at the Cumberland Nursing Home. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing with her great-grandchildren. She lived for her family.

Surviving are one son, William J. Schaffer and wife Marsha, Virginia Beach, Va.; three daughters, Sandra Landaker and William E. Dennis, Norfolk, Debra Stoops and Wayne Stoops, Frostburg, Karyl Kuykendall and husband Jeffrey, Cumberland, one brother, William Sivic and wife Florence, Eckhart; seven grandchildren, Thomas Landaker II, Krista Hollaway and husband Jeremy, Kimberly Garrels and husband Marc, Karah Stoops, Shannon Mawyer, Ryan Schaffer, Lauren Schaffer; seven great-grandchildren, Donovan, Brooke-Lynn, Nathaniel, Ralphie, Charles, Emma and Kaitlyn; her loving companion of many years, John Pendergast and family; her adopted daughter, Teresa Merritt and family; numerous nieces and nephews; and her loving pet dog, Benny and kitty cat, Inky.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday, June 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday, June 5, at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Kuykendall, Thomas Landaker II, Ryan Schaffer, Jeremy Hollaway, Marc Garrels, Wayne Stoops, William Dennis and Rick Hamilton.
